Rick DiPietro is back in professional hockey. Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford confirmed on Saturday that the former New York Islanders goaltender had signed on for a 25-game professional tryout with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League, Carolinas AHL affiliate. Rutherford also said that the former NHL All-Star and American Olympian will join the team on Saturday night. DiPietro was the first-overall pick in the 2000 NHL Draft, but never lived up to expectations with the Islanders. He famously signed a 15-year, $67.5 mill. deal with the club in September of 2006. The 32-year-old native of Winthrop, Massachusetts was waived by the Islanders three games into last years shortened season and was finally bought out by the team in July. DiPietro has a career mark of 130-136-36 in 318 career games. The Hurricanes are currently without starting goalie Cam Ward, who sustained a lower body injury and is expected out for three-to-four weeks, and back-up Anton Khudobin is recovering from a lower body injury of his own and is expected to begin skating on Sunday.
